Do you think that the kid knew that Bruce Willis was dead? If so, when do you think he knew and what makes you think either way?

Some coworkers and I were talking about this the other day and you can bring up some good points either way.

~ugh~

unless he's mister stupid and doesn't get it, sure. but think of it--if he didn't know, then how the fuck do you have a conversation with your mother about what you did today, how the therapy went, etc?

Hmm?

This is easy, Code knew Malcolm was dead at the instant they met.

I quote from the script:

quote:
INT. CHURCH - DAY

Only a few people sit and pray in the sea of oak pews.

Malcolm scans the majestic room and finds what he's looking for in the last row of the church.

He moves down the center aisle towards the back.

Malcolm finds Cole playing in his pew with a set of green and beige plastic soldiers. Cole makes the soldiers talk to each other.

COLE
(soft)
Pro... Fun... Add...

The words are unintelligible.

Cole senses someone. He looks up and sees Malcolm staring at him. The boy immediately goes white. Every cell of his body still with fear.

MALCOLM
It's okay, Cole. Don't be frightened.

Cole stays rigid. Hands clutching a handful of plastic riflemen.

MALCOLM
My name is Dr. Malcolm Crowe. I was supposed to meet you today. Sorry I missed our appointment.

Malcolm waits for a response. None comes.

MALCOLM
Do you mind if I sit down? I have this injury from a couple of years ago and it flares up every once in a while just so I won't forget it.

Beat. Cole slowly slides down the pew, giving Malcolm most of the seat. Malcolm sits.

Cole fidgets with his soldiers. Beat. Malcolm looks over and stares at Cole's glasses. He leans forward to inspect them more carefully.

MALCOLM
Your eye frames. They don't seem to have any lenses in them.

COLE
(soft)
They're my dad's. The lenses hurt my eyes.

.
. skipping to end of this scene...
.

COLE
Next time I won't be scared of you.

Cole turns and starts to the rear of the church...

Why was Cole stiff with fear at the very first sight of Malcolm? Because he saw dead people all the time and he certainly knew how to recognize them and probably most of the time the encounters were unpleasant. It took a little time for Cole to realize that Malcolm wasn't like the rest. He was good and really wanted to help Cole.

but why? Thats like arguing about Jaws saying the main characters didnt know they were after a shark, it would then become a rather spurious discussion. Why not just add to the undying "word association MMXIV" thread .

Call me crazy, but that was the BEST movie I EVER saw...

And don't compare it to Matrix or anything like that. It's the story line that counts in this case. Anyone can throw bunch of special effects with help of modern technology but to come up with something like this it takes lots of brains

Ducati, are you saying that the Matrix was just special effects? Apparently you only watched it once, and missed the plot :P I thought the Matrix was an awesome story, very original, a lot of symbolism, just like Sixth Sense.

Yes I did and I actualy like it. It painted some gruesome pictures but it happens. I thought the could have made the
ending a little nicer... didnt have to kill John Conner ya know. I guess it worked for shock value and added to the depth.

Oh and regarding the original thread, yeah he knew he was dead... I haven't watched it since the theatre but I dont remember his mom acknowledging Brucey.

Sixth Sense is one of the best films ever made.... and I can quite easily back this up.
A lot of people have a big expectation that in order for a film to do well it has to have 1 or more of the following things:
*Blood and guts
*Sex
*Action
*media centered celebs..i.e. Julia Roberts, Tom Cruise, etc
*THE LATEST SPECIAL EFFECTS
Now, there is nothing wrong with these elements, I'm just as much as a fan of these as the next person but too many directors and producers think if they throw these in, there's a Box Office Smash Hit in the mail along with a Oscar.
That's why I totally adore M. NIGHT SHYMALAN....his writing abilities are just astronomical so far and he is really level-headed. Hopefully he doesn't let the devious insinuation of Hollywood into his mind and keeps on track...
So that's why I love Sixth Sense.....a simple but bloody effective story that just shows often simple things are often the best and that you don't necessarily need big boobs bopping up and down on the screen or the most advanced digital effects ....I could always fall into my critique of the directing style, use of colours, acting, production design but I wont.
The ending is truly overwhelming....I can never help but feel the build of all these emotions deep down in my gut when Malcolm realises what actually happened to him. That's why films are my life....the feelings you can get, the ideas you can have, the experience you've just had gives me the best feeling one could EVER feel. Long Live M. NIGHT! And good on fellow Aussie Toni Collete for doing a stunning performamce especially in the scene where Cole tells her his secret and Haley Jole Osmond is the only child actor I've ever liked,...now that's something

Well, I will have to argue that Bruce is a pretty media-centered celeb Is there any way we could edit the title of this thread to warn folks that haven't seen it to stay out. And I hadn't ever thought about that scene that way Bugs, good point. I mentioned this in the other thread too, but the DVD of Sixth Sense has some great director/commentary info on it and talks about how carefully they choreographed the characters' interaction to make sure it all holds up on a second viewing. Great stuff, well worth picking up if you liked the film.

And yeah, American History X was a good, disturbing film. And I agree, Radical Rob please edit the spoiler there...
