Yep, and boy was that a beautiful game. We looked a bit shaky at the beginning of the second half, but we got our act together and even tacked on a goal!

Unfortunately, Grumble, I'll be rooting for Korea tomorrow... DAE-HAN MIN-GUK!

[Edit: Hmm... after reading that post again, Grumble, I get the impression that you are mocking us. Mexico did not lose to us, we beat the crap out of them.]

What a game...what a second half...if the US boys can continue to play at this level...then we have a good chance against Germany..

Mexico sure is a poor loser...can't believe all the ruthless 'attacks' in the second half...

And the referee from Portugal...hmmm...but despite his 'referee-ing', we did it...

Congrats, US boys...now, time to 'up' the game...against Germany...

Yeah, tell me about it. Hasn't Mexico ever heard of the "FIFA Fair Play" thing?

On the positive side, the Korean announcers were nice to us. Cha Bum Kun (scroll down), who played in Germany and later coached the Korean national team, was the analyst. He was saying how the US showed today why they deserve to be in the quarterfinals. When Marquez got sent off, he also said that players like that shouldn't be playing in the World Cup. I can't stand watching any of the other channels, but I like Cha Bum Kun because he knows the game and he doesn't talk stupid nonsense like some of the other "analysts."

Example: I think this was in the Denmark-France match, but I can't be sure. Anyway, Cha Bum Kun was the analyst on MBC, and there was another analyst on another channel named Shin Mun Seon. Somebody apparently watched both channels at the same time (not sure why, but whatever). Zidane was hurt, and he was making a rotating motation with his hand. Shin says, "Oh, Zidane is complaining to the referee!" Cha says, "Zidane looks like he's hurt, he's asking to be taken out." So then Zidane goes over to the sideline and eats (drinks?) something. Shin says, "Zidane is drinking a nutrient substance (bad translation)." Cha says, "Zidane must be hurt, he's taking a pain killer."

Anyway, the person then wrote this on a message board somewhere, chastising Shin for basically spouting crap out of his bunghole. And it's true, which is why I hate watching matches when Cha is not the analyst.

OK, enough rambling. I'm just psyched about the win! Time to get some work done before the Belgium-Brazil match. I don't care who wins that, so it will be relaxing.

And Brazil scored again, another beautiful goal. Belgium just put it in the net, but they were offside. We're now into extra time.

I kind of feel bad for Belgium. They really picked up their game in the second half, controlled the ball and created a lot of chances. They did play very well. Brazil, on the other hand, had flashes of brilliance--which, apparently, was all they needed.

Well, it's official now. A heroic effort by Belgium, but Brazil go through.

I'm pretty shocked on what I'm hearing in this thread about Brazil's game...are you guys nuts??!!??

They played against an extremely hard defense, and broke it with ease...something that no other team could have done. Man, I'm a bit miffed...Brazil played a 'perfect' game against Belgium...letting them run, and run, and run...until by the second half, they were just too tired to be affective...and out came the goals...a very 'tactical' approach, to a very 'tactical' Belgium...which just goes to show that Brazil can play against any strategy, and win. And with ease...Brazil didn't have to really play hard...and that is shocking...they played a very easy, light game...and that was more than enough.

Although Belgium played very well, and gave everything, they just didn't have a chance...

Of course, that's just my opinion...

Go Japan and Korea!!! Knock two more European lands out of the WC...and I will be more than happy...

Then there will only be three...Germany, England and....Spain. I would really love to see the semi-finals without a single European land in it...it's never happened in the history of the WC...and it's time that the Europeans get 'shocked' out of their arrogance...which is overall very good for soccer as a whole. You wouldn't believe what is going through the news here in Germany, and on talk shows, etc. Is Senegal getting the respect that it deserves? No, they have just got 'lucky'...well, how about the Asian temas? Well, they have European trainers, so that's why they are doing so well, and on, and on...the f**king Arrogance! Here in Germany it's already been decided...they all are talking about how nice it is to be WC! And as for the US? Not worth mentioning! It's unbelievable...*shakes head*

DAE-HAN MIN-GUK! BA-BA-BA-BA-BA DAE-HAN MIN-GUK!

*Ahem* Sorry for the shouting, but I'm half deaf now so I can't really hear myself. Sorry I'm late, too, but it took an hour and a half to get home from city hall.

Wow. Where to start? Well, we arrived at around 12:00, ate lunch, then I waited in line while my wife went to teach from 1:00 to 2:00. At 1:30 they started blocking off the roads and letting everyone in, so I just went along. I was kind of worried my wife wouldn't be able to find me in the crowd. I mean, it's not like I could say, "Just look for the red T-shirt."

She did find me, though, and from 3:00 they started the official "festival," which consisted of a whole crapload of cheering interspersed with some Korean singers performing on the big stage they had set up. The weather was very hot, and my arms ended up almost as red as my shirt (even though I used sunscreen). Once the sun started to set it got cooler, and everyone started to get more excited. I don't know exactly how many people there were, but we were up toward the front and there were people back as far as we could see. They said that over 400,000 people showed up at city hall alone last time, and they were expecting more this time. Anyway, they were lots and lots of people.

The match started after what seemed like forever, and we got the penalty kick almost right away. Unfortunately, An Jeonghwan blew it, and the crowd quieted down a bit. I think we were all a bit shocked. Then when Vieri scored it got real quiet.

But Korea stayed in the match, and I kept telling myself they could come back. In the last friendly before the World Cup started, Korea came back against England and ended up drawing, and they came back against the US late in the second half. But Italy played some great defense, and it really looked like it was the end. When the forty minute mark passed I remember thinking, "What am I going to say to the guys at the Asylum?"

But then, two minutes before full time, Seol Kihyeon jammed it into the net. Everyone jumped up, screaming at the top of their lungs (yours truly included). I can't remember the last time I screamed that loud. It was insane. I don't even clearly remember what happened, just that the whole entire city seemed to have erupted. Fireworks were going off, people all around me were hugging and crying.

There were chances on both sides before the whistle, and Cha Duri had that overhead shot that he planted right in the keeper's chest. It would have been nice if that had gone in... When it went into extra time I kept thinking, "Please score a golden goal," because I knew we didn't have that much of a chance in a shootout. Finally, An redeemed himself, and the celebration was even crazier than it was the first time. Of course, everyone was screaming again, the fireworks were going off, there was dancing, hugging, crying. It didn't matter if you knew the person next to you, you hugged them anyway.

My wife and I decided to try to get out early so we could beat most of the crowd (just half a million people, that's all). We walked to Seoul Station, and on the way it was more high-fiving and hugging. Of course, everyone wanted to high-five me, so the walk was basically one big celebration. The cars and buses were all beeping their horns: beep-beep-beep-beep-beep, and then everyone would shout DAE-HAN MIN-GUK ("Republic of Korea"). Repeat this about a thousand times and you'll get the idea.

We finally managed to get home and eat something (we had some snacks, but no meals after lunch), and I think I'm finally getting some of my hearing back. It's still mostly a very loud ringing. And my throat feels like I just drank sand.

So, An redeemed himself, and Hiddink, of course, is a hero. There's been something going around the Internet these days, basically to this effect: if Korea makes the quarterfinals, we offer to make Hiddink a natural Korean citizen; if Korea makes the semifinals, we don't give him a choice in becoming a natural Korean citizen; if Korea makes the finals, we elect Hiddink president. There was nothing about what would happen if Korea won the finals. Most probably he would be elevated to the status of god. He's already halfway there--believe it or not, but tour companies here are offering trips to the Netherlands that include tours of Hiddink's place of birth.

Unfortunately, Japan did not beat Turkey. The Korean reaction to their defeat, though, was interesting. During group play, everyone was talking about how Japan and Korea had to make the round of 16 together. But once the round of 16 was made, everyone seemed to be hoping Japan would lose. When they announced the final score, everyone cheered. No matter how it may appear on the surface, the rivalry still runs pretty deep.

And as for Europe being shocked, I think that's already happened. France, Portugal, and now Italy--a lot of the contenders have already been knocked out. And of the eight nations in the quarterfinals, only three are European (yes, I know part of Turkey is technically part of Europe, but most of it, including the capital, is in Asia). I would love to see Senegal win (which I think they will), of course I want to see the US beat Germany (stranger things have happened), and I will definitely be rooting for Korea against Spain. I also think Brazil can beat England, and if all of that happened, we would have no European nations left. How likely is that? Maybe not too likely, but it would be nice.

Of course, it would create a dilemma for me, being that the US and Korea would meet again in the semifinals. During group play I couldn't really root for Korea (until the US fell apart against Poland), but today I was a red-blooded Red Devil. Of course I would have to root for the US, but it would be very hard. And I can't very well root against either of them in their next matches... I suppose one team going through would be ideal, but I wouldn't want to have to choose. If neither team goes through, I think that would be even worse. At least if both teams go through I know one of them is going to be in the finals.

Well, it's almost two in the morning here now, and I have my thesis examination tomorrow (yes, I have my thesis examination tomorrow and I spent all day at city hall screaming like a lunatic--why do you think I'm in the Asylum). So, pleasant dreams, fellow inmates. I bid you a good night, and in parting: never underestimate the Red Devils!

DAE-HAN MIN-GUK!

Well, a quicky from Holland; We're not in the game -see you in 2004, we'll kick some serious butt!- But everyone's pretty excited about the Dutch coach Hiddink doing well for Korea (for details, see Suho's post) and right now, in Rotterdam it's a massive frenzy, and the Turks (We've got quite a lot of Turkish people living in Rotterdam) are filling the streets, celebrating their victory against Japan.

Good clean fun.

Edit: I read the rest of the thread, and agree that Europeans can be pretentious assholes when it's about football, though. I asked around, and most of the persons I know think it's deserved that Europe hasn't come far.

ok children, time for a little in-depth analysis from the master. I uncover the real truth, the stuff they don't talk about on tele.

Argentina and France went home early for one simple reason: no mohawks. With the ousting of Japan we have seen the first mohican departure but this is only because of the superiority of the Turkish player, Davala's mohawk. While the Japanese fella's mohawk gets style point for rooster-like handsomeness, Davala's is right down to the skin, a more aggressive, true, dare I say, fierce mohawk.

I've heard that Ziege has shorn his mohawk? If this is true, a more stupid tactical move has never been made and I'll have to lay the blame squarely on the shoulders of Rudy Voeller for allowing this (Voeller also caused the German's early departure against Bulgaria at USA94, this friends is another story altogether). If it's true that Voeller has screwed the pooch again and allowed the shaving of the classic strip, colored nationally (indeed a powerful do), then it's without reservation that I give the match, in advance, to the United States on the merits of the Mathis Mohican (a true, to-the-skin do with very powerful mojo).

After all, as every American sportscaster has known for a good 30 years, soccer is all about the hairdos.

Well, an hour to the England-Brazil match, one I am really looking forward to--it should be a good one. And, despite any emotional attachments I may feel that would beg to differ, I would have to say that the winner of this match has a pretty good chance of going all the way. Personally I think Brazil is going to win, but you never know.

Wakkos: no need to apologize for rooting for your home team! But I don't think it will be an easy match for Spain; Hiddink, with his experience in Spain, is very confident. It's going to be another good match, hopefully. This time around, though, I'll be watching it with the in-laws. I don't think I could go through another day at city hall...

JK: If you're right, then the Korean barbers need to get to work, and fast! I vote we give Ahn the mohawk. Cut off all that beautiful hair.

No webShaman, don't feel sorry.

I like Korea a lot, but I know Spain, and Korea is a very fast team, but spain knows how to defense themself (though is not one of the best defenses in the world) the have Puyol for the right side, and I don't think that Korea will go through that side, not easily. In the middle defense is Hierro and Helguera, you saw helguera his 2 last matches: none could pass through him, and Hierro is well known all around the worlsd as one of the best defenders. In the left side is Nadal, experienced, not excerlent but experienced and very good in air game. Korea is Fast, but with that cover-all-sides defense, has not much to do with.

In the middle field, I have my doubts, if spain go with Valeron and Joaquín, could be very harmfull for Koreans, since those kids go excelent: Joaquin it's unstoppable for the right band, he can go for the outside or the inside.
And Valeron always makes those killer pass to the forwards (excelent forwards, BTW) and in the right side (Oh!! GOL ENGLAND!! COOL!!!!!!) we have De Pedro. Very good runner too!!

Let's see, whoever who wins, I know it's going to be an excelent game!!!!!

As for England's goal, well, it has definitely turned the tide of the game in England's favor, but I still think Brazil can get back into it. As long as they don't go giving the ball away in the box again, of course. Man, that was some error. Kind of reminds me of the error Italy made that allowed Korea to tie the game.

[WS: do you really consider Turkey to be a European team, though? I know they may technically be a (very small) part of Europe, but I don't think they fall into the same class as Germany, Spain, and England, especially not in terms of arrogance.]

Hi Wakkos,
Yes, I do. Born and raised here.
I'm not really aware of what DirecTV is saying but all I know is that the main TV channel of Brazil, the Rede Globo, bought from FIFA the rights to air all the games of WC with exclusivity. They own also Net, a cable and satellite TV that is a rival of DirecTV. So, here in Brazil, only Rede Globo is airing some selected games (free for anyone that has a TV) and only Net (their cable TV and satellite TV) is showing all the games (pay-per-view). They paid US$ 200 million for this exclusivity, according to what I've read.
So, DirecTV is pissed off because they can show absolutely no WC game and Rede Globo is screwed because they were not able to make all the money they need to pay this high bill. I've read they will have US$ 100 million of losses. I'd say, a step bigger than the leg, if you understand what I mean... (Brazilian saying).
Since this is a private matter, the government gives a sh*t about it and I think it's right this way.
