Why can't we have Applet Sigs?

Then the sigs could be interactive as well as artfull....
(and don't give me any bs about it's not built into UBB!)

its a cool idea! but i even would like the idea of flash sigs more!
you can insert java/flash sigs in the forums where html is enabled!

on some other board implementations (phpbb) the [flash][/flash] tag already works.

edit: also, i remember taxon winning a sig contest with a flash sig once.

mmmm.... nice bright flash anoying sigs?

It would be very cool if used with the proper skill and moderation. Im sayin right now that It would be sickly abused.

The asylum is for text communication... not for flashin your stuff. A sig is just an easy way to identify a persons posts... A sig should Not be distracting... and that is exactly what big flashy sigs are.

It is an interesting idea. I think the potential for abuse is great but if any group of people can do good things with it... it would be us Even if we do say so ourselves. We could learn a lot and it might be a decent way for some of us who have avoided Flash to give it a try. Hmmm....

In my opinion, one hundred excellent flash sigs aren't worth the single humungous, horrible, distracting one that the author will be too lazy to change.

No !!! agh, no.

I have a 56k modem !

Also people might not have flash plugins or java compilers installed.

I hope this forum never implements such a feature, its bad enough with people with huge sigs.

I suppose it might be a good idea if:

1. Normal sig rules applied (so keep the size under what? 40kb? Tops).

2. You don't use nagware - which Flash is . Some people would prefer not to be harassed to download the plugin everytime they view a post - there is a solution as our FAQ (now ranked #3 in Google searches for disable Flash ) proves:
http://faq.ozoneasylum.com/446/

HTML is enabled in certain forums to allow people to use Flash but anyone going to the multimedia forum knows they might be in for a bit of Flash harrassment.

I can't see too many cool sigs making past one or both of my points above and I could see such sigs becoming a real annoyance for some people.

Sorry.

It's a security issue, not a potential annoyance issue. Enabling html is a risk on any forum - it's been discussed somewhere - much mischief can be wrecked with html enabled.

Right?

Steve: Enabling HTML is a security issue but GRUMBLE has suggested something like [flash][/flash] which would let us work around that - which is why I was concentrating on the other problems

Hugh, flash sigs would take much less space than an equivalent gif-sig.
flash is vector orientated and so there are only numbers saved and not pixels like in gifs or jpeg (at least as long as you stay with basic flash stuff)
and with flashMX now there is even compression!

and for the plug-in: most common browsers today already come with the flash and java plug-in preinstalled. and those people who havent are relly missing somewhat.

Grumble: True, but if people could use flash as sigs they'd probably put audio into it, and people who make gif animations to the equivelant in a flash sig are fools to begin with. Myself I dont have the latest flash thingy and I dont think my Java compiler works.

audio .. jesus, imagine, audio .. agh.

I suppose isnt such a bad idea and flash does run smoothly even on older PCs, but that wont stop people from using as much features as possible.

With ani-gifs it takes time to make them decent so huge animations in Gifs isnt too much of a problem.

Emps - what makes you think security can't be compromised by Flash sigs? Oh my goodness - anything scriptable is potentially a risk, and Flash can trigger .exe files on a PC plus who knows what else. There was a thread running at were-here that the administrators at first tried to supress but finally gave up - basically how a cracker could cause mayhem (wipe a hard drive maybe? can't remember exactly) with Flash. The admins finally gave up because they figured it was important info for legitimate developers and sys admins, but their first instinct was to lock the thread. I didn't follow it, 'cause I didn't understand it, but I certainly did understand that , just like JavaScript, Flash could cause "bad things" to happen.

Heh.

Doc's decision to turn off html in the forums is not an oversight or a whim - there is a reason. If I remember right, Mr.Max was the one who raised the security issue. Ask him!

Steve: Thanks for that news Flash (geddit?? New to me - although I suppose it shouldn't be) and I suspect InI could tell us the same horror stories about Java.

If that is the case then I'd have to say a big no and I'm wondering why we haven't got all HTML switched off in all forums.

I think Flash sigs would be a fun toy with a few rules.

If someone has an annoying sig, us mad sci's could just remove it and tell them to get a life.

I have a 56K modem in which I barely can get a pathetic 42.6K connection speed. I usually surf the Asylum w/o graphics turned on cause it takes forever to load these pages with images for sigs....

Lucky you, my 56K modem has never connected higher than 24K, and is usually just barely at 21.6K. In other words, my vote here is a great big huge NO.
