Ahh, today me and my friends discovered something very, very.... Cool....

Yes, today after school we came across a long, long, water tunnel that goes underneath a road. We saw a little opening/drainage place in a parking lot and noticed the tunnel led to it. We explored under this tunnel in pitchblackness with spiders and grasshoppers, and we went about 100 feet before we got to this... Room! Where the drainage brought light! We came back an hour later with a hammer and some nails and furniture... Some nails in the walls and some shelves went up, some spray paint on the walls, some chairs, and a.... toilet ... All in like an area of 6x5 feet and its about 7-8 feet high... So we decorated! We talked long about what we could do here... Homework, Chill, Magic, DnD... Plenty! It's a really cool place, if only we had more room, ermz... It's a really cool place and I am gonna get a Digital Camera soon and just take photo's galore...

I am sorry I just felt like sharing this.

Insider, what you've found there is a storm drain, a very dangerous place to be. Many kids die every year playing in those things. A sudden downpour, even quite a distance away, can cause a flash flood to sweep through there and drown the lot of you.

Oh, and some really nasty stuff washes through there off of yards (e.g. dog poo) and streets (e.g. oil and more dog poo).

We used to have a few places like that to hang out.

One was like a cellar under some apartments. Concrete floors and walls. Just a few steps to get in and out. I tell you what, fireworks sure were loud in there. At the time, I wasn't privy to what the older kids were up to in there. Smoking pot and things.

We also had an island in the fork of the river. It was about 20'x30' with some shrubbery for shade and to hide behind when things got nasty. I couldn't tell you how many shoes and sandals I lost while wading to the island. We did have a make-shift bridge for awhile, but it didn't last too long.

Then there was the old railroad car. Just sitting out in the woods minding it's own business. Had a barbeque pit and everything. It sure got hot in there during the summer. It was a great place to hang during spring and fall.

We also had a tree fort behind the school. There were trails back there that went for miles. Over the course of a week or so, we hauled all the lumber we could find back there and cobbled it together. We even made some bows and arrows that worked rather well.

Kinda makes me want to watch "Stand by Me" again. :sniff: The joys of being young and adventurous.

When I was a kid (teenager more like, maybe 17?) we lived near an old abandoned Nike Missile base. It didn't look as cool as the pictures at that link, as they had long before hauled off all the missiles, but the silos were still there, they had just poured about a foot of concrete over each one and left them. The missiles lay flat inside these things, and then big doors would open up and the missile would pivot out to take out Cuba or some such place, only it never happened. By the time I was a kid of trouble-making age, the base still existed, but was manned by only one lonely security guard. We'd break in there every weekend and jimmy our way into the barracks/warehouses scattered over the base, finding all sorts of cool stuff. For years we had picked away at one of the smaller doors to one of these silos, but at 17, we were ready for some serious con(de)struction. One rainy evening we broke in again, but this time we were armed with pick-axes and sledge hammers, being youths of sledge-hammer age by now, heh. Of course, even the most bored and lonely security guard will rouse himself in a rainstorm after a racket like this, right out in the middle of a flat concrete plain, banging away on concrete with steel doors under! It took about 3 weeks of trips to put a big crack through the slab blocking one door, each door being maybe 10 feet long by 4 feet wide. Coolness, it was counterwighted, and we were able to swing it open, concrete plug an all! When it closed, you'd never have a clue it was ever tampered with, at least from a jeep cruising by. We spent one evening running a spool of wire from a lampost nearby to our little bunker (burying the cable under the dirt, and wedging it into cracks on the concrete after.) Let there be light! Man, we had some mondo cool parties in that place. Towards the end of the summer we had some problems with flooding, but it mostly went into this big hole where the missile used to been.

So! I do understand. However, some of the other big brains are correct, you're likely to get drowned hanging out in a storm drain, they're designed to channel just tons of water, like right past your stuff, and you, filled to the brim most likely. I'd look around for abandoned government buildings, every town has 'em it seems, and government buildings all have deep dark basements, go figger. =)

Heh, reminds me of when I got pulled up for stealing a "No Trespassing" Sign from an abandoned Army Barracks just last year. Although I had to trespass in order to steal the sign. When I was pulled up by security I explained what I was doing and why I was doing it (Wanted it for my wall) and they let me have it! Too cool. But I lost it along with a full 750ml bottle of vodka in a card game. Ya win some ya loose some.

My youngster hangouts were usually large unpopulated outdoor areas. Like a big arse pine forest. At least it was big until we kinda burnt it down when we were stupidly experimenting with airesol cans and fire. I think it's all houses nowadays.

Man that forest was cool though. It had everything. Heaps of stray cows from some nearby farm (Usually only on Tuesdays). Wild boars to run away from (Only had to do that twice). A huge lake that I tried to river jump my bike into and managed to hit the only surface rock breaking my leg. Yup... we had it all. A good 200 acres and no one else was ever there. Yet I don't recommend breaking your leg in a place not accessible by a car.

I heard that the military was seling some old missile silo station bunkers things. I read an article about in Omni many years ago. Now that's a studio apartment. One couple built a house on top of one and was in the Guiness for world's largest basement.

Can you imagine having that kind of space? The driveway and the "garage" doors alone are impressive.

Ok first I would like to adress to some comments:

Everyone: IT ISNT A GOD DAMN SEWER!!!! I MADE SURE OF THAT BEFORE I WENT IN THERE!

Wes: No it isn't what you think it is, and my friends have already been in it a week or two ago when it rained, and all it did was rise about 6 inches of water, considering that it DID rain pretty hard.

DG: Please elaborate on the... prison comment

WS: The nearest cave is in lousiville and that would be Horse Cave, ask AT about it if you must

Genevieve: Really it isn't grose! Otherwise I wouldn't go down there. There are a few grasshoppers in another tunnel.

DL: So far all I have seen was some coke cans and ciggarette packs, we had this theory that it may have been inhabited before...

WJ: When I found that place Stand By Me was exactly what I was thinking of. BTW not to get off topic but I was thinking of you today at school in biology. We had to light some uhh, gas, and my friend was to turn it on while I went to get the sparkler thing thats ignites the gas. I come back and he said he turned the gas on a tit' (yea right, and a beaker was in front of it which is what we were gonna heat), and I stood far back and BOOM, turned that bitch on and about 7 inches of flames shot that beaker to the floor and in to shards. It reminded me of when you lit your burner and 2 feet of flames as you described about a year ago in a thread in the Philo forum. Heh, not to wonder off topic though... No tree forts, no caves, just a water tunnel that goes under a road from 1 ditch to another with lots of little tunnels filled with nothing but concrete. Lemme say this again, ITS NOT A SEWER. But I really would like to know if it was illegal, if so I am getting the hell out of there, don't want to get cought playin cards in the ol' water tunnel.

Doc: WOW I can't even begin to fatham a person like you w/ a sledge hammer and pick ax

I really appriciate all the safety concerns, a LOT. I am still very timid about stepping down there, but it seems the more I do, the safer it is, or so I hope. ~gulp~

~Pops in Stand By Me~

Thanks all.

Hmm, that's funny, I would've figured that would be an easy and natural thing to imagine! I especially like sledgehammers, I used to never drive anywhere in my old beaters without one, you can never tell when a sledgehammer will be just what the doctor ordered! (I also carried a morgan-knocker, just in case, heh.) I still keep a small 3 pound sledge around for small household tasks. (Malin is such a lucky girl! =)

I got in trouble at an old flat I used to live in in Minneapolis once, the rumour was that the apartment building I lived in used to be right across the street from an old speakeasy from the '20s, and there was supposed to be a tunnel from my building to the one across the street. (Long since walled up, I figured.) How awkward to be found in the basement trying to explain the pick-axe, lemme tell you.

Please, tell me I'm not the only one who gets himself into these kind of situations! How embarrassing.

Gonna let it go this time? As you mentioned, it can all be "just opinion"...so why crack? Why react and play fool to a statement? I think the stormdrain idea is asinine, and probably holds shades of the future in great display. Point was made...and yet you'd rather run down a road sure to bring you more grief and more illustration of that selfsame idiocy? Seems a bit masochistic to me.

People have given you some great advice here...and here's just a hair more: Yes it's illegal to try and occupy a city stormdrain. It's also hazardous, and more than a slight bit lacking in preplanning.

Nonetheless, feel free to hang out there in the rain. That's natural selection...and I'm not saying it to be sarcastically mean...I just mean it.

Insider just because you watched the drain in one rainstorm doesn't mean that its safe. I was a storm in KC where the rain came down so hard that the drains filled in less than 20 min, turning the streets into rivers and parking lots into lakes. You'll be underneath all this water. It only takes one bad storm.

Hey, what krets said sounds like a blast, and I liked exploring places like the one you found when I was a kid. But your talking about hangin out there and doing some kinda "Dead Poets Society" thing. Bad idea.

If you insist on doing this and are eventually drowned tell your next of kin to email me so I can post the details and this thread here.
