If you know how to put a page together in HTML, the next thing you should learn about would be CSS. Have a look at the font formatting properties, play around with borders, paddings, margins and you'll soon find that it's pretty easy to make your pages look more appealing that way. The CSS tutorials at the GN are a good place to start, and there are also some other useful links in the FAQ.

ZOX has some nice Colors on the web pages online which help you finding working color schemes, and What's behind the great designs by DmS is also a really good read.

Hope that helps you getting started

Trigger: I think kuckus has hit all the important points. My only extra recommendation would be to drop your sites into site reviews and we'll let you know where you are going wrong (and going right of course) and give you pointers on how to address specific aspects. Anyway things might not be as bad as you think

The page that ZOX build is very good. I have used it before and I use it now. Check it out...

In my opinion, besides the usability of the page and navigation, colors are important. VEry important. Try to look at some peoples portfolios to get some ideas and inspiration - that could help you. Learn CSS. I just recently started to mess with it and it opened a totally new doors for me.

Use your colors right, keep it up...

Yes, definitely learn CSS. But don't learn it because it makes your pages look neat (although it certainly does), learn it because tables were never ment for page layout, because separating form and content is the way to go. I guess what I'm trying to say is that CSS isn't just another cool gadget, it's the future of the web (or at least one part of it). Like Ducati said, it will open up new doors for you, and hopefully change the way you think about building web pages.

[Edit: In addition to the links in the FAQ entry kuckus posted above, check out Blue Robot's Layout Reservoir it's not a tutorial, per se, but it does offer a few ready-made layouts. Some people just use them as is, and some people modify them to fit their needs. Me, this is where I started when learning CSS. I'm much more of a hands-on type of person, and being able to play around with a working layout and pick it apart to see what made it tick was extremely helpful. Once you get the hang of it, you can use the CSS2 Specification from the World Wide Web Consortium for reference.]
