OK, which one is the best?
I'm planning to get whatever's best in the future

For starters, Mac is a type of computer and Windows is an OS. I'm assuming you mean Mac or PC, right?

"Best" is a rather subjective term. The way I understand it, each platform is better at different things. I'm not an evangelist for either side, though, so I really wouldn't be able to give you details. I'm sure the evangelists will come along shortly to bombard you with "facts." A warning, though: Mac evangelists tend to be much more fervent than their PC counterparts.

What it will eventually boil down to, though, is what you need your computer to do. This will determine not only the type of computer, but its various specifications as well.

Yannah take my advice and don't buy a PC. I've used a PC all my life and seriously if you've got windows your gonna hate it. If your buying a PC it's best use something like Linus or Solaris. Their good but they don't have many compatible software or games.

Yannah - Both platforms are fantastic.

Apple makes a great machine and despite some evidence that suggests the company might be misleading about the speed of its new computers, they will continue to offer a quality product. Apple also happens to make a very expensive machine. It will cost you significantly more to purchase a top of the line Apple then it will a top of the line PC.

If price isn't an issue to you and you like the look and feel of the Apple, by all means go with it.

For many people your age, you simply don't have that choice. You're forced to use whatever your parents purchase. Any of the PC companies produce quality products at significantly lower prices. The lower prices don't mean lower quality or inferiority.

If for any number of reasons you refuse to deal with Microsoft, don't listen much to the Linux bias. Many people have just never used the operating system.

I'd estimate that Linux offers more [quality] software then both Microsoft and Mac combined. If you know where to look for software, you'll never have a problem finding it.

OSS, such as the Gimp, is fantastic and just as good as their propriety counterparts.

In the end everyone uses a computer differently. If you're just going to be surfing the net and reading emails, it seems silly to me to pay more money for an Apple that looks nice.

Buy whatever you need and can afford.

My take?

They both suck.

Macs cost more usually, and if you try to use non-mac hardware addons, non mac printers and palms and about any non mac anything, it will blow up in your face.

On the other hand, if you always buy mac stuff for your mac, it will run smoothly, and you will be out of cash.

PC's are well... not macs. They run a little slower I hear but you get more options about everything and they are just down right lovable.

I notice differences, but they're all subjective. Different people care about different things. I have reasons to prefer PCs, but not huge, definite reasons that'll be right for everyone. The only good answer is "try them both, then pick the one you like best."

I just have bad mac luck. I have and have problems with internet connections, a monitor, printers, palms, cd-r's... my list goes on... And I have all kinds of weird adaptors to connect pc things into the mac.

I bet the newer macs interface better though. I tried to talk my grandmother into a new imac... but she didn't want to spend the money on it. I think they are easier for people who don't understand computers.

Yannah, I'd go for a PC. But like they said, it depends on what you want out of it.
They say for video editing the Imac can't be beat. And like DN said they're better for graphics, but i'm not totally sure bout that. I know professional graphics people who use PC's and they're just fine. For gaming, a PC will kick a mac's @r$e. big time. Also, as far as i know a PC can do just about everything a mac can do (not everything as good, though) and more. I may be wrong though, I haven't used macs too much.

I wouldn't even think on buying a Mac. I can't find software for it in my country.

While I have not used a Mac I have read a lot about Macs and PCs. So here it goes:

The current Macs are a good match for the PCs in performance but they cost more. Macs tend to be better for workstations for there stability in workstation apps. But there are less games that run on Macs then PCs.

PCs cost less then many Macs and have many options in games, work programs, and hardware. PC are less stable then Macs because not all the combinations of hardware and software work well with each other and Windows is generaly unstable.

On what darknosis about hating Windows that is a very easy thing to do at times with its crashes and security vulnerbilities. Macs usualy avoid most of these problems but so does Linux on the PC.
So if you want to plans games, type documents, and use the internet a PC is probaly the better choice. A good one can be had for between $700-1700. For more work type things like video editing, 3d modeling and video editing I have heard that Macs work better.

I like the way the Mac OS feels. It's elegant as oposed to the Microsoft's clunky feel IMHO. Also the color gamut looks more accurate than a PC. On the other hand, you cannot deny the gaming of the PC - it kicks butt! The PC is good but not great, but that's just my experience with them.

Get what you want and upgrade the ram. They are both good but the Macs look cooler.

Note: I use PC's with Microsoft Windows NT/or 98 and Mac's with 9.x/10.x. I came to these conclusions using all the Adobe, Macromedia, MS Office (yakk), and other software.

Yannah .. the best advice your going to get is to check out borh products for yourself .. it really comes down to what you like to work with and what you like to play with(not including yourself .. jk) .. Macs .. IMHO .. are for the simple minded person(not to say I haven't met a few mac lovers that know what the hell they are doing and talking about .. but as for PCs .. they take a little more care and time to maintain .. that's about all I can say without creating to much of a stir

don't get me wrong, Macs have taken a huge step in the right direction by basing on Unix.. an Open-source platform (In My Humble Opinion) is the first step to 'owning' your own computer...

...but, unfortunately, that seems to be where it ends. Allow me to pose an example-

...I've been thinking about modding a soundcard to control various fixures around the house. I.E. the porchlight, the garage door and so on.... I could dial in to the computer and make it take control.

You can't do that on a Mac unless it says 'Apple(R)' on your buissiness card.

As long as it's totally propietary, it can never be totally good. Period.

This is a pro, not a con?
InI seems to be the most educated on the platforms thus far. Here's a "simple-minded" point of view though (since you asked). Want to play lots of games? My understanding is that there are many more games available for Windows...Although, my opinion is that a console is still better.

I've used both for a variety of tasks and I think Windows has come a long way with their OS. So has Mac. I work on a Mac and a PC only on occasion. When it came time to buy a home computer, I had to beat my husband over the head and drag him to the Apple store.

No regrets.

I was trained on Macs and PC's. So I'm happy to have access to anything that works. I like the fact tha PC's are so accessible and that I can easily modify my op system, and screw my machine up as often as I want. Sometimes getting inside some modern Macs is like cracking a safe.

Windows are nice cos they can be broken... but essentially I think 'all' computers are brilliant.

Not to get off-topic here, but true gamers know that you've gotta have both to get a well-rounded diet. PCs (and computers in general) have better online play, despite XBox Live and similar attempts, and they have a few game types that simply don't translate to the console, such as first-person shooters or real-time strategy. Consoles have more action games and "formula" games such as shooters, fighting games, and Japanese-style RPGs. I have a PC, my roommate has a PS2, and we've perma-borrowed a friend's GameCube, and we play the best GameBoy Advance games through the power of evil... and even so, we feel like we're missing out on some of the XBox lineup.

Lest you say "wow, PT must play a ton of games!" keep in mind that 99% of all video games are crap. It's honestly hard for me to find something I'm happy with! Since the remaining 1% is spread out among five or six platforms, you've got to keep light on your feet.

Last *I* checked, Photoshop wasn't the only graphics program that exists.

I think actually, some people get a bit confused there, Macs aren't neccesarily snappier for graphics work, I'd call it "multimedia" work. Dealing with CDs, DVDs, Photos, Digital Video, Desktop Publishing, hm. Probably a few other things in that mix that I forgot. Of course, there are and always will be exceptions depending on the programs you use, have access to, or have the $$$ to buy.

I quite agree, PT. I had a huge debate with myself when deciding which console I should get, but it's near impossible to get the best of all worlds. I finally went for the PS2 and got a GBA-SP later

Yannah, I use a Mac and wouldn't trade it for the world. However, it may not be for you.

With a Mac you'll get a good machine that's easy to use but you'll pay more. But, the provided software often makes up for it.

With a PC you may or may not get a good machine depending on who makes it. The majority of available software will run on it and it will probably be cheaper.

Stripes... I'll kick your ass with solids, but given the choice I'll take stripes...
