Okay, so I'm still a firm believer in "Judge not, lest Ye be Judged". Seeing as how I've critiqued a number of pieces around here now, I thought I'd finally toss out something that's been irking me that I was working on, and could use some better eyes.

So, if anyone recalls the huge Sig fest, when I was wireframing it up..hehe...I worked on this wallpaper before all that happened, and ended up putting it away because I wasn't happy at all with it.

So let's rip it to shreds to see what all Cap'n Peter screwed up..~lol~

Ok, we'll start with the good:

• I really like the middle strip....the variance of the curves and all the subtle lighting and shading gives it a nice feel.....reminds of ribcages...and something wrath-like.
• The blue and white is very nice....although the color-dodge bright light thing is a bit overused, it's rarely done this well
• The little rectangular "disturbance" pattern is pretty cool, and flows into the brightness of the gear thing quite well -- looks like something that could be born of the magic of Imladris(geek points opportunity here!!)....

Ok, so the bad:

the perspective on the gear is fucked up -- the right edge seems rather angled while the left edge is squared and flat....the shading on the central "disc" part is also a bit unbalanced.

The pattern at the top and bottom is uh.......dude it's bad <img border=0 align=absmiddle src="http://www.ozones.com/forum/frown.gif">

The same shapes but flat rather than 3D wouldn't be so bad...or a bumpy but plain texture instead.

I don't know DG. I've been staring at it for an hour.

The water reflections on the wall - kickass.
The colours are purfect and has a real professional look to it.

The Cog...Blur out the bumpyness on top for certain. ummm ahhh! Edges! darker edges for definition perhaps just around and in the centre.

The mesh that shows through looks wild, I'd like to see more of it. If it's outside the aquarium mebbe a little reflection of it in the glass. And the glass holding the water back could be more err glassy in the hollow...ya follow? hehe

*Ofcourse that all rides on my asumption that it is an aquarium I'm looking at. Doh.

• The flow of the image absolutely kicks supreme ass. I've always been a big fan of images that "pop" out of the flow of the image--rather than so many Bob Ross paintings (which are good in their own way, yes.)
• The gear, though terribly nifty in its own right, feels like the picture that was taken of me and President Kennedy--superimposed and doesn't quite fit. Not sure if I'm seeing it right...ehh.
• The boxy white stuff...I may be the most un-hip person on this planet, but I have no idea what they're for--with such precision and flow as the rest of the peice has, those bits just pop right out and divert me from everything else that is more important.
• Blue blue blue...don't make me sing the song. I love the color blue.

So, DG, do you have to sell your soul to do cool stuff like that or can us regular mortals do it too?

The shadow off of the hub in the center of the gear causes the gear itself to look a little 'dished in' in a dinner plate curve kinda way. I don't know if this was on purpose or not. Those white boxes *are* a little out of place, at first. Well, still. Maybe. I could stare at that for a while I think. I think what you've done there with the white 'squares' could be worked into city lights behind the bubble or aquarium or force field or the or the... I like the way they get sucked in and intensified in the center.

Dark Garden, like DL says the perspective of the gear looks off. Also, the patterns at the top and bottom of the image are horrible. Another thing is the shadow of the gear, you shouldnt have color dodged(or burned, I always get them confused and dont feel like looking to see which it is.)it. It just doesnt look right. The squares underneath it are teal and blue.

Eh, thats the only thing I can really find wrong with it. You should make it a little smaller and get rid of the pattern and instead leave that area white and make it a wallpaper.

The gear Rocks, and the Background Rock, but my brain dosent know how they are connected... also the wavy white boxes along the middle are distracting. I like the blue, and it hurts my eyes more than anything i ever did... i LIKE it. yeah, and get rid of that boxy pattern. Maybe you could put a shockwave in the place of the little white boxes. i dont really like the gray lines. augh... my monitor is only set at 800x600... about the size of the gear. tone down the white in the center a little. a *little*. the color dodge under the gear is to extreme!
other than that it rocks!

I think it is quite nice but I have to agree with the gears perspective being screwed. It makes it look flat in places. Very good job on the color scheme though. I dig the ripples and the sparks. It is almost like the gear was drug across the thing to make them. Cool pic.

I've got to agree on the perspective, and the texture, they've been annoying me more than anything. With the criticisms arrayed, I might just open this file again to rework it.

The "texture" was the result of some last minute fiddling that I'm really unimpressed with, but for some reason, I still like the little white boxes.

eyezaer: everyone's getting a chunk of the idea "right"..it is supposed to cause the feeling of water, and a bit of that "drag: creation, as well as a strange bit of breakdown. DL nailed it so close with his "ribcage" comment as well. For a bit of perspective, the actual name for the piece was going to be "Viral Pneumonic"....and the rest is cryptic..hehe.


Great job guys, keep tearing it apart, so I can rebuild, I'm loving the viewpoints.
