I don't think dried blood smells... so as long as you don't apply it too thick and make sure it dries quickly maybe it will be OK. That would be a total guess, though. I really haven't smeared blood on surfaces much since my animal sacrifice days, and back then we didn't stick around to see if it smelled.

Once it's dry it should not smell at all (unless you really rub your nose in it)
Anyway you'd need to fixate it with some kind of varnish or spray once it's dry. (considering it's water soluable even after it's dried)

Yep you will have to fix it as Nimraw suggests or it will start going off and attracting flies and that won't make you many friends.
A better bet might be to make some fake blood - I know quite a few good recipes.

that's interesting yannah .. doesn't blood dry black-ish? are you going to try and keep it red? are you using it with any other media? would you mix it with something to affect it's texture? like gesso?
i've seen paintings created with human feces. the blood thing should be a picnic compared to that...

Or you can use a hairdryer on it to dry it. This has an effect very much along the lines of drycleaning, which bakes in the blood. it's no longer water soluable after that, but it dries an ochre red rather than black that way. But yes, blood, when it dries normally, turns black, and you'll need to use an enamel varish or fixitive on it afterwards. Blood and empasto would be... interesting, to say the least.

It would depend on what you are making it for but these come highly recommended by a guy I know who does special effects/makeup:
http://www.shades-of-night.com/painneck/blood.html
The green and blue food colouring is to take the pinky edge off the red food colouring (which is further exageratte when added to corn syrup).
If it is going on someone then add a dash of liquid soap (but avoid getting it in orifices).
And let us know how it goes.

Just a thought here, but wouldn't using fake blood kind of defeat the purpose? Of course, I don't exactly know what your purpose is here, but most artists generally use unconventional media to make some sort of statement. Fake blood would make a much different statement, I think, than real blood. Unless, of course, that's the intention--but from your original post, I'm guessing it's not.
Just some food for thought...

OK, see, if you're just going to start mixing up fake blood, why the hell not just use red paint?
Besides, I think your syrup solution is going to eventually attract a colony of ants who are apt to walk off with the painting.

Yes, exactly. This was the point I was trying to make earlier. Unless you're deliberately trying to make a statement by using fake blood (for example, you could paint a very gruesome picture using fake blood to show how we are desensitized to violence by the media--I just made that up, so don't slam me for it), you'd probably be better served by mixing up a paint that approximates the color of blood.

But is corn syrup that looks like blood any different than paint that looks like blood? How would corn syrup be more symbolic of blood than paint? How would the statement differ?
I say you're better off with paint if just for the simple fact that corn syrup won't set -- it will only leave you with a sticky mess. Leave the corn-syrup blood for B-grade slasher movies.

I however, am not such an artist, so you don't really have an argument from me.
Me, I would draw my own blood and splatter it on the canvas...

Personally I'd draw someone else's and splatter it on the canvas - you can be more liberal with it without the woozy light headed feel (and if you are aiming for that too - tequila and/or standing on your head is a good substitute or is fake giddiness from blood loss not on too?).

Hmmm, what do I think? I think, this place has taken a strange twist. Blood? Blood indeed. As an art medium it seems quite a challenge especially with all the bug issues.
Would flies lay maggots in the blood? Would the squirming, evolving maggots become a sort of living art? I think if one uses blood, some sort of flesh should be used as well. None of that synthetic crap either. That would just be garish whorism to the plasticene existence of our techno-media culture.
Real Blood!
Ooh! Menstrual Blood! That is apparently in great supply... 51% and all... perhaps you could set up a bake sale at the local school and women could trade their menstrual blood for cookies and cake...
Hmmm, this gives me an idea!

Another idea to mask the smell is to make a second piece to go with it -poo on a canvas and spread it around with a stick and hang them together and no one will notice the smell of the blood and it will probably not be attacked by flies as much!!!!

I would say that using real pig's blood on canvas or some sort of paper (either wood-ish or cott-ish alike) would be the best effect for a blood medium. Why not? If you're worried about it attractig maggots, try hair spray (on the front and back).
But hey, if it's a sculpture, I dunno.. What the heck are you going to make the sculpture out of...? Meat? Blown glass? Your own bellybutton lint?
I agree with Suho. Decide what you really want. I would totally go for the meat sculpture. Just don't get mad when we find you, and throw you a mysteriously tasty barbeque party in a seperate location completely unrelated to the missing sculpture!
