I stop in completely randomly every few months. I don't know as it has any true purpose, because I typically have no intention to post even if something struck me as interesting. There's a few oldies out there I'd like to get in touch with again at some point... but I think to some degree, while the fascination exists to stop in and say hello to each other here or via emails, it's like a high school reunion of sorts. You say your piece, they say theirs... and you go back to whatever you were doing until you get curious enough to find out if they are still there -- and you do it again. (not that this is a good or bad thing... it's just a thing)
Talk about inmates noticeable by their absence. The birthday boy himself has been keeping a low profile.
Happy birthday Doc.
Nice "Asylum" header image by the way, whomever made it.
I usually pop in once a year or so to see what's going on. Haven't participated earnestly since the early days though. This place was really special to me in that it bridged the gap between being a hobbyist and becoming a professional web developer. Back in the 90s the Doc whetted my appetite for the potential of the web. A community like this was really special because the web wasn't very interactive yet and blogs were few and far between. Now we have half a million web development blogs and Google. Granted it's nice to be able to find an answer to anything instantly, and the work we are all doing now is at another level, but I definitely get nostalgic about the simpler times. Here's to those carrying the torch forward, talk to you next year
There was a time when the web was newer and we were night coders and midnight tinkerers. Everyone would prop their sig with pride and hoist up their latest and greatest invention. We ate it up and threw tips in each others hats. We even took a family photograph one year (link anyone?).
The world has realized, "hey, there really is something to this internet thingy" and they waved their fist full o' dollars, and made us for hire. Now, many of us are just too busy to post. Doc found a girlfriend, got hitched, introduced her to us, and then they both rode off into the sunset. (talk about deep flings ).
Life goes on, but the Ozone colors remain the same. .

I'm bummed to see sites like our Asylum slowing down, the Stack is cool and all but it doesn't have the personality that this place does.
bah...it comes it goes. This happens all the time. That Stack Overflow looks like it would be difficult to get around in.
It does seem that a lot of spammers have been getting through lately though.
I know I never really contributed much, but let's change that this time around =D
I'd love to see this place as lively as it used to be. I remember a time when you couldn't even read half of what went on in the quickchanges if you missed a day. good times, good times.
anybody up for a game of pong?

In the immortal words of Dr. Nick "Hi Everybody!"I switched positions and just haven't had much time, but I still pop in now and then to peruse a thread or two...I still recommend this forum as the best place for coding and graphics info on the web... shame the chatter has subsided. I suppose we'll all have to make a concerted effort to liven things up a bit in here. Peanut butter biskits here if you're still hungry Wolfen!
Hey WS, sorry, visited here then went to Costa Rica for a week
hope everyone is doing well, I'm working for a small marketing firm, primarily designing websites and presentations, and also doing a bit of freelance work on identities and websites. I just launched Fusion Beans, a heavily modified/hacked WP template. It's actually fantastic coffee (roasted by a very talented friend of mine) if we've got any coffee drinkers around (he says, already knowing the answer to that question).

Hah! I sell jewelry now - it's all I think about (have time to think about, I mean.) Last couple of months were all about scripting the new checkout POS system using jquery and json objects - learning time for the ol' doc there, heh. Now I'm integrating Facebook, so all sorts of people are shocked to see me there! "Hey doc, you into... social networking now?" =) I had a visit from Bugs a few months back, that was cool, (and also a little surreal at first!) I love meeting people finally and discovering we get along well in meatspace too.
Where was I, what am I doing? Oh yah...
? I live in Leucadia, California now.
? Malin and I got married about 5-6 years ago.
? We started up http://deepfling.com/ Jewelry 4-5 years ago.
? We have 3 cats - Jpeg, Tonka and Peppar.
? I gained 10 pounds, like out of the blue! Weird.
yeah. Life gets busy. Figured you were chin deep in necklaces and bracelets. I hunted your FB down and added you. Don't know you in meatspace, but one day perhaps, life is funny that way.
Good to "hear" from everyone! I just popped in randomly myself and see that I missed Doc by mere days. ESP?! Doc, the site is awesome as usual! I hope everyone is doing well. The Asylum was an extremely important component in my career direction and I'm very thankful to have been in the company of pioneers so many years back.
Since then, I got into web development and had much fun. 2 years ago we started a company called Mango Languages (www.mangolanguages.com). We serve U.S. public libraries with an online language learning system. The experience I gained through you fellas has been amazing. Thanks for being there!
Still alive here. Living in NYC, professional Flash/Flex programmer now, after bouncing around through all varieties of coding. I've moved away from the design side as much as possible, which is why I left the Asylum, but when an Asylum page came up in a random web search (something about the onScroll DOM event) I noticed this little reunion thread. Just letting you know I'm doing fine.
I talk to Skaarjj pretty frequently -- he's doing well too. He's got a place of his own in Melbourne, and a career as a sysadmin. He recently left a bad situation at his old job, with some hard-won experience, and is on the trail of a new one. These are tough times, but he's a man of skills, and I'm sure he'll do fine.
I see some familiar names here. It's good to hear from the good Doc. I am still an active Asylum inmates, but not as active as I used to. Still a good place to hang out, though, and I really miss the good ol' days learning all things web design. I'm teaching now, but haven't lost the web development things. Been doing some new web projects lately, but never really got to finish them like how I wanted to.

He he. Thanks!
I've been in Norway, working for Opera, for 4 years now. We met here and yes it was a bit fast, but well... when you know it, you know it
Nice to see the asylum is still open .
Unfortunately the Gurus Network seems to have died more or less, except for the Doc who actually intends to clean up the Spam mess around there...
Aah, around 2000-ish, those were the days...
Cheers,
Robin.
