I believe, the only way to do it without involving the Mad Scis, is to simply re-register under a new name...

And there's your answer, Karl. There's really only one person who can go and do it, and we haven't heard from him in a while. Add to that the fact that it's simply just alot of work to do it, means we'd prefer that if someone wants to change their username, they simply re-register

Another great and smart idea is to use a new name with a hint of the old one, for instance, you re-register as Wuthering_Heights_afka_Karl, for instance, so we know that you were Karl, and after some months, you can re-re-register as Wuthering_Heights_no_need_for_afka_anymore, and finally, some more months past, you get finally to the Wuthering_Heights nickname, by re-re-re-registering. You can add some more intermediate steps if you think you need more for the transition.
Isn't it a wonderful idea?

Ahhhhhhhh well thats me told then - I had assumed the wonders of relational databases would have made this fairly straightforward but clearly not.

sorry. but if he do this then it would just take up space on the membership list, wouldn't it?

Karl:

There's no point of changing your username to another 'cos it will not just take up time but you will also just confuse people in here, just as the people above me said.

Yannah: And? The average user account (and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong here) on this board is less than 10 bytes in size...even with 5000 of them that's less than 5Kb of data for the entire user database. We count this as alot more desirable than putting in the work to change every record of Karl's name to whatever his new name is going to be.

Your post count?

So what I am gathering here is that I should jump in and reserve a bunch of names, just incase I want to use them in the future. I mean, what if I want to use Super Spud and find out that it was registered 3 years ago, even though it was never used....

Super spud could be lost to me forever!!!!!!!

Jason

On the other hand, if Karl changes his name to Doug, and Steve changes his name to Karl... Who would be the real Karl?

What we need are bar codes.... Forget the names...

I think that the MadSci's could assemble a Grand Ozone Jury for deciding on nicknames when there is a dispute. So, if you are known as "badass" amongst your clan, and some other guy comes first and takes this nick, than you file a formal complaint to the Grand Ozone Jury, bringing proofs that you're nick was cyberjacked, and the Grand Ozone Jury will decide.

Note: Please note that I didn't say it was easier to change a username in the grail. Nor did I say it's more difficult. But it set's bad precedent, and the guys where the importer can not make the link from their username to their cell, because, their username doesn't exist in the database anymore, quite frankly annoy me.

Ahhhhhhh but Mr Prime people are going to be doing this anyway by registering new names) whether we make it easier for them to do this. At least having a solution where we can change people's names means we don't get the confusing istuation of some inmates having various different accounts over time

I think it more confusing to click on a name, and get to a cell that apperantly belongs to some one else.
Reregister, if you want a new name. Write that in the contact details of your old account, if you want. But changing names of existing accounts is a can of worms which I don't want to open up.
