Hey, I was just playing around with some tuts and made this. Can anyone give me some tips to make it look just a tad more realistic? There is just something not quite right about it...

I am going to add some capillaries in there but what else?

I find if you bevel spheres it makes them look more 3d... and try a little lighting effects?

CTRL+CLICK the layer with the eye on it to get the circular selection of it, create a new layer above it. Do a radial gradient of foreground to background on that layer in the selection from the area where you want the hotspot to be to the darkest side of it(which will bge one of the edges of the circle). Make the bacground colour black and the foreground colour mid-grey.

Change the layer blending mode to 'overlay'. With the eye still selected, goto IMAGE>>ADJUST>>BRIGHTNESS/CONTRAST and adjust it up to 100%, repeat, this time to 83%. Flatten image and voila!

This is what I came up with http://www.geocities.com/freizah/eyeball.jpg

That what you were looking for?

I really don't see much difference skaarrj....except there's a little more grey....

You need to make a lot more depth on the white....but you can't forget the backlighting either.

It needs more shine...more highlight...more contrast, you know?

the detail in the iris is too faint and the color too opaque....(see above <img border=0 align=absmiddle src="http://www.ozones.com/forum/wink.gif"> )

capilaries will help of course, but you already mentioned that.

not a bad start though <img border=0 align=absmiddle src="http://www.ozones.com/forum/smile.gif">

I think it needs some kind of reflection. When you look in someones eyes, there is always a reflection of other things in the room in their eyes.

Who's blasting anyone skaarjj???

that one's better, but it needs a more cohesive outer "shell" .....does that make sense? right now it looks like the iris and pupil are popping up out of the white. Needs to look like the cornea is covering it all.

I haven't tried an eyeball yet...if I have time I'll give it a go.

Ok, for the iris, I just made a circular selection, took the airbrush with a small size and opacity, selected random blue colors, then made curvy lines outward from the center. I made a black circle in the middle and blurred it's edges very slightly (the pupil). Then I made a white oval for the outside part. I selected the transparency of the iris, cntrl-shift-i, then fill with black, cntrl-shift-i again, then blur even so slightly, cntrl-shift-i, delete. Repeat this process again for the outer part of the eyeball. Then....more highlights and shadows on the white part. I think I ran a lighting effects, duplicated the layer and set one to multiply (35-50%) and one to color dodge (15%). I can't quite remember, but I know I had several other highlight and shadow layers. Experiment! Then I added some light red wavy lines set to 10% opacity on the white part. The highlights are just white ovals, slightly blurred, set to color dodge.

And yeah, I get what you mena by the outer shell thingy, you mean that film of oils and stuff that always coat the eyeball? I know all about that, it's just I can't do it, I've never been much good at shiny stuff like that, any good tutes you know about?

How`s this KRETS ? Is this what you were looking for ? DL-44 suggested more contrast, and a little more continuity in the iris which can be done if it`s close..
It involves 9 or 10 layers in varing opacities and modes, a bit o airbrush, some lighting effects, 2 pepsis and 4 swiss cake rolls

That iris there is way to small, unless you have a rare (and real) condition where your iris is really small and so you can see the whole thing in the eye socket, not just the middle.

well what I do.. probably more long winded than other folks around here.. lol.. is create my sig over a background colour of 40,4,4 (rgb values).... then I will merge all layers leaving just the background layer and the merged one. Then I load the upper layer (CTRL Click on the layer icon) and then go to my channels palette and create a new alpha channel using the selection I just created. Next (if needed) I will do a bit of touch up using levels/curves, sometimes a tad of gaussian blur.

Then I go back to my layer palette.. and then convert my doc from rgb to indexed (image-->mode--->indexed) allowing PS to flatten my image.

Next I will go to file--->export--->gif89a and use the alpha channel I created as a mask to select the areas I want to be transparent!..

hey presto! <img border=0 align=absmiddle src="http://www.ozones.com/forum/smile.gif"> (long winded but always works for me..I think!)

hope that helps...

Vogon gave the RGB code for the color. I gave you the HTML equivalent. Basically it is a color that is halfway between the light and dark colors of the forum.

Use that color for your matte on your tranny gifs to make them look good on both shades.

Krets is specifying the same colour as I did , except as a hexidecimal code....

rgb value is 40, 4, 4

hexidecimal value is #280404

hexidecimal numbers are used in html to specify colour... if you look at most html sources for web pages you will see these hexidecimal codes used for BGCOLOR=#xxxxxx where xxxxxx is equal to a colour...

it can be used whenever a colour needs to be specified, i.e. font color or in the body tag for BGCOLOR, or for a cell background color ...

edit: typos
edit: btw.. this hexidecimal is only supported in PS5.5 and I presume 6.0.. previous versions dont include this in the color picker menu!... fyi

I understand the colors and RGB and HEX, the part I don't get is the mask. Maybe I need to try it in 5.5 and not 6.0
