How many fingers do you use by typing. I can with 10 but still find it easier to type just with 2. I guess I should improve myself

P.S. Typo

Well, I always use at least 4 fingers and both thumbs, for a total of 6. If I take a stupid typing test where I gota type somebody elses stuff, I can hit about 30-45 WPM, but if it's my own thoughts I go well over 75 or so, go figger, heh. Just type, it'll work out!

I use all 10. I type very fast. I also do a adding machine just as fast. My uncle owned a business supply place here all my life and gave all the kids type writters and adding machine and wow did
we love the cash registers he gave us for playing store! So I started early but that made it hard
taking typing in school and having to unlearn the wrong way I had taught myself.

I never really thought about it until now, and I have to watch myself as I type this to figure it out... okay, I use 6 I think. Index through ring finger on each hand... only using my right index for hitting the space bar, and only using my right ring finger for hitting the shift key. Oh, and I type very fast.

I am not really sure, so I am trying to think of it now as I type this... It seems I am not using the right hand smaller finger at all, and so far I have not use the left hand thumb either. I guess that make a total of eight.

As for how fast, I am not sure, but I think I type fast enough. While in the army, we were learning typewriting, and had a program that measured how fast you could type the whole alphabet. I remember that I "won" our internal competition with a record time of 1.70 seconds. Beat that if you can! Oh, and that's the swedish alphabet with the extra three letters. Need I mention that we were often rather bored, and had to amuse ourselves the best way we could :P (which also included many many hours playing minesweeper. I am still quite proud of having been able to finish the easiest level in one second )

edit: I just read DG's post and realise that I too use the right pinkie for enter. So I guess that makes nine.

I use all ten when I type. I actually almost flunked keyboarding in HS because I couldn't type without looking at my fingers. Now I hardly ever look at them. The only strange thing I do is I only use the left shift key. I can also type very fast.

and i clock around 120 or so.

I use the middle finger and thumb on my right hand and the index, middle and ring fingers on my left hand. I use the little finger on my left hand to operate the shift key. I think I type about 80 wpm. I actually took typing lessons when I was young and when I was in the Navy, but they didn't take.

I was a hunt-&-pecker for years till I got one of the original MS Natural keyboards. Two weeks later I was typing with all 10 digits. I now have the MS Natural Internet keyboards (the ones with the blue buttons at the top) on all desktops and servers except my laptop. My wife, who worked in a law firm typing legal docs for 20 years, is amazed that I can type faster than she can. I owe it to Microsoft, believe it or not.

Anyone try a Dvorak keyboard? From what I've read, most people get up to 120 wmp with no errors after only a week. I found one that is qwerty/dvorak swithable and an seriously thinking about it. Or I could just pop my keys and re-map.

Any experiences with Dvorak?

yep, its funny how history works.
a quick lesson for those who dont know - back when there were typewriters, them typists were going so fast that they jammed all the keys.
so then, some guy arranged the keys so that the most comonly used letters were all spread out on the keyboard, and presto - no jammed keys.
in case any of you havent noticed, that really isnt much of an issue anymore!

Geez, thats like the weirdest looking thing I've ever seen. I sorta always wondered what the difference would be if they just left the keys going in alphanumerical order. Instead of "qwer" it would be "abcd". I could see where putting the more used keys would be thought of, but once you get used to where they are, whats the difference, I know on one of my calculators, we have letters on it, and its in order and its pretty easy to type ...

I use all 10 at one time or another but I can't always guarantee where they'll go! I got an "A" in highschool typing class because I fixed the typewriters when they broke. Better mechanic than typist although I do about 35-40. I'm pretty sure using the Dvorty keyboard would result in apoplexia. (try typing *that* word fast).

My biggest problem is putting my fingers on the wrong keys cause I'm still kinda used to putting my middle fingers(old mac layout) on the little nub instead of my pointers(pc, new mac) even though I've been using the "new" keyboards for like 2 years now.

Well, I use all ten fingers and type about 100 WPM on a good day, 80 - 90 if i'm lazy. I took typing eighth through tenth grade so I've been at it for a while.

FYI, there's a really cool game out called Typing of the Dead that's similar to house of the dead, except that you type instead of using a gun. Check it out
here

It's a pretty big download though, but the game is really fun. I'm waiting for the retail version so I can pick one up.
