in a vain attempt to satiate his curiousity, threep asks:
"i just wanted to know - what religions do we have in this place? i thought it would be cool to see 'em all, WITHOUT it being tangled in some ridiculously cyclical theologocal debate.
Let me start the ball rolling:
i am a christian, and if we want to get pedantic, i am from the reformed denomination, which stemmed from the protestants, which more or less adheres to the beliefs of luther and calvin (no, not the comic book character with the cool --stuffed toy--!)."

...threep edits his post in order to keep certain pedantic asylumnites happy...

....threep edits once again for clarity:
"i hate to be such a thread tyrant, but i'll merely voice my desires - ignore them at will.
i would love it if people could comment on their own {religion / moral set / mopping ethos}, not on how {apathetic / 'crutch' like / wrong} someone else's is. i love debate, but it has its place, and it would be great if we could avoid the tedious.

What are you saying.. I am god!

Seriously, I started life as a Roman Catholic, decided to be a Pagan when I was 13. That lasted for about 5 years untill I was studying Religion at Uni and have since lost almost all faith. I do have beliefs and do still consider myself religious, I just don't conform to any kind of religion per say.

ONE OF THE REASONS I CREATED THE CONCEPT OF "FREE WILL" IN THE FIRST PLACE IS SO THAT YOU COULD ALL SORT THIS OUT IN YOUR OWN WAY, WITHOUT INTERFERENCE FROM ME. THEREFORE, I WILL NOT MAKE ANY DEFINITIVE STATEMENTS ON THIS SUBJECT, BUT PLEASE BE ASSURED THAT I WILL BE FOLLOWING YOUR COMMENTS WITH GREAT INTEREST. CARRY ON, AND HAVE FUN! (WHOOPS! I do find the Pagan religions to be quite interesting though. Maybe I'll pick one up.

Christian, grew up Catholic and now non-denominational (and what the heck is a non-practising Catholic and if you don't do is there really any point to hold onto the name?).

I guess seeing so many "don't know, don't care" responses surprises me, especially in an intelligent, thinking group like this. I mean, drawing your own conclusion is your right, but I would think that people that seem to think about a lot of stuff as much as ya'll do would consider what's around you and how it got there. Just thinking out loud...

And silence, our beliefs do line up on Calvin and Hobbes

heh. Funny stuff. Curiosity is evil.

I was born Catholic. I've been recovering from that action ever since.

Currently, I have more in common with the Bhuddists than I do with anyone else. Though I can't agree completely, because I do not believe in a higher-life-force-being-god-thing. I'm all about me and the people around me. Life is suffering, we've got that connection. We're all seperate, though brought together by our pain.

So, in all honestly, I have a philosophical religion, one based on respect and connectedness. I do not give into dogma, into sinning, into afterlives, into reincarnation.

I am.

I just wanted to say that it's not that I don't care. What I meant by "Whatever" is that I'm whatever you want to label it as.

I don't believe in a god. That's it. It's not that I don't want to. I just don't. I'm too much of a skeptic.

I was also Christened Catholic as an infant, though my mother never pushed it. I've been exposed to all sorts of beliefs growing up, especially that of the Lakotas. I have to say I lean more towards the Native American beliefs generally than any other.

I'm agnostic.

I believe in what all the prophets knew to be true.

The reason ya'll are so atheist and skeptical is because these religious fanatics try to cram this doctrine down your throat which was mostly all written for purposes of population control. Where the truth does shine through, it is metaphorical because it was written for people who could not believe anything that didn't fit their realm of experience.

God is not some mythical being, or great judge sitting in heaven looking down on us. That is a story told to trick people into behaving a certain way. God isn't OUT there, god is just EVERYWHERE & EVERYTHING.

I'm agnostic, meaning I believe in all religions. I was merely explaining my own beliefs which I may state strongly, but are still just my personal beliefs. I think people would be better served to seek their own spiritual enlightenment rather than have it spoonfed thru a formula such as religion.

I still believe in all religions because they were created by enlighted individuals who were trying to benefit the world. I don't like religious doctrine because words (especially words copied and translated by who knows who over 1000s of years) do not convey the truth of the soul, and at best can hope to spark the thought that leads to the truth in a person's mind. I mean, I'm sure we can both agree that there is a lot more to spiritual matters than what is defined in our human languages.

I'm sorry to have offended you.

jiblet,

You didn't offend me. But I never thought that "agnostic" referred to someone who believed in all religions. Here's the definition I'm using:

Agnostic: a person who holds the view that any ultimate reality (as God) is unknown and prob. unknowable; broadly : one who is not committed to believing in either the existence or the nonexistence of God or a god

I think we are using different definitions for the same word.

Creator, Destroyer, Shaper. I was always God of this perception. So, who made whom? "I am the insurrection and the strife."

I am a Traditional Catholic and have been since I was born literally. Although there are some things I disagree with and some things I agree with in other religions. Religion pretty much has been and is a large part in my life...sunday school, religion classes, mass, holy camps, retreats(that was fun, tell you the story another time),
and went to a traditional catholic school for four years. Now I'm at an anglican co-ed school. WOOOHOOOOO....excuse me. (My last school was an all boys school) Some of this stuff I was forced to do in one way or another but I've always made fun out of it while it's lasted in my own little way. Plus I have an interest in withcraft and gothic stuff. I also believe in ghosts, devils, aliens, UFO's, banshees, amongst other things. I probably believe in these things because I have had some experiences with some of them. But those stories later....................
For all those who were Catholics......they say catholic roots run deep.....so never know

Hmm, Bugimus, I guess I am not agnostic then. I have very concrete theories on what God is, but I still believe it is unknowable. Kind of like in math you can use infinity in calculations, but you can never really comprehend it as a number.

If I can't call myself agnostic, then there is probably no label to apply to me. I never reinforce any of my beliefs, but constantly modify them as I learn new things. In this way I will never blind myself from the truth for the sake of stability.
