If you're on a Mac I HIGHLY recommend BBEdit 6. The more I use this thing the better it seems. Here's a few of the features that I find particularly useful for my webwork (HTML & PHP mostly): |

Simpletext was my editor of choice. Then I started saving Excell spreadsheets as HTML files and absolutely abhored the code. Since simpletext doesn't have a find and replace function so I started using BBEdit to fix those nasty tables. I got to liking the colored tags, so I've stuck with it. I don't even use Simpletext any more. |

I like Max HTML Beauty ++, it is really nice. But I wish it could preview the page in different resolutions too. Dreamweaver 4 is also great, but I hate it when you go between code and edit mode and the cursor jumps to a different place. UltraEdit I also use, it fast baby, and it is great for "fast fixes" and scripting/coding. Been waiting for the new version of 1st Page 2000, but it doesn't seem to arrive in this century. It's also pretty good, but for now, Max's proggy is better. |

Dreamweaver 4 is the bomb - basic rule: if you don't know what HTML is, no editor is going to help. I edit my code even after DW is done with it almost all the time, but if you don't unerstand why it works, and how HTML is laying thigs out, and why stuff gets pushed this way and that, NO editor is going to really help. Dreamweaver, for me, is a way of getting my tables up there without spending all day coding the numbers seperately - that's all . . . |

i've been using allaire homesite, which is also a code based editor. i decided that i wanted to see what the layout editors had to offer. my conclusion is adobe golive is terrible and i have still yet to make good use of dreamweaver's layout features because i keep going into the code to edit the html, which defeats the purpose of a layout editor. maybe it's because i'm not used to it yet but i'll give dreamweaver another shot. i went to the macromedia site and saw homesite on its tech support page. did they buy out allaire? as for golive, that program crashes every other second. went to adobe's technical support and it's actually documented as a known problem since version 3! i can't believe they don't fix a problem like that in the later releases. crashing is negative productivity. |
